1. Earthquake resistant buildings
The difference between a earthquake resistant building and a normal building is that a normal building is fixed to the ground. Where as, an earthquake resistant building (building on the right) is isolation bearings, which aloud the building to sway and not collapse.
As you can see, the fixed base bends the building and the isolated base moves instead of the building keeping the building vertical.
